If you suffer a cavity during your orthodontic journey with braces, then there are a couple options. First, you need to contact your dentist. This is very important because you don’t want the decay to compromise more of the tooth and even the surrounding teeth. Our orthodontist, Dr. Joseph A. Wilson, is happy to tell you the possible next steps.
When you visit your dental office, your dentist will contact your orthodontist and discuss the right treatment process for you, just to make sure it doesn’t intrude on the alignment process. If the cavity is minor and not too destructive, your dentist might recommend delaying restorative treatment until you are done aligning your smile. However, this will only be the case if you promise to take great care of your smile each day to prevent the progression of the cavity.
If the cavity is too severe or too dangerous, your dentist will need to repair it as soon as possible. To do so, they will use a dental filling, dental crown, or other dental restoration to fix the tooth, depending on the severity of the decay. This will help you restore the health and function of your tooth as well as boost your overall oral health.
