Avoiding Bad Breath Can Be Especially Challenging If You Have Braces

Bad breath: Two words you never want to have to think about when speaking in a social or professional situation. Unfortunately, it’s a common turnoff, and can be especially difficult to avoid for anyone who wears braces. The friendly orthodontic specialist at Orthodontics, Inc. is often asked what to do to prevent bad breath during treatment, and we’re always glad to provide some tips.

First off, what are the causes of bad breath? There are many of them, but fortunately they’re avoidable.

  • If high levels of bacteria are accumulating in your mouth, the result can be the release of sulfur compounds that are malodorous. Inflammation of the gums can also be a contributing factor. To make your mouth less accommodating to bacteria, make sure to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing twice a day to chase away any leftover food particles.

  • Some common culprits: Eating foods with strong odors like onions, canned tuna, and garlic; and even dairy products that leave a sour taste in the mouth; consuming alcohol or smoking; and a dry mouth that isn’t producing enough saliva to banish leftover food particles.

  • Braces can make the wearer particularly susceptible to bad breath because they provide plenty of sneaky hideouts for those tiny bits of your last meal or snack. That makes brushing after each meal a necessity, and consider adding an interdental, or proxy, brush to your arsenal to clean those hard-to-reach places. If your toothbrush is out of reach, at least give your mouth a good rinse after eating.

A few extra tips: Clean your tongue with your toothbrush or a tongue scraper to expel bacteria from the mouth; stay hydrated to promote saliva production; and of course make sure you’re having regular dental checkups and cleanings.
