When it comes to fluoride, the glass is more than half-full
Updated: Nov 3
At Ortho Inc., our orthodontist provides our patients with all the information and resources they’ll need to make sure that the smile we’ve worked so hard to create stays healthy and radiant for years to come. While we use state-of-the-art techniques and materials to help achieve that smile, including nearly undetectable braces and clear aligners, protecting it can sometimes be as simple as drinking a glass of water.
That’s because most water coming into America’s homes through community water systems contains fluoride, which has been proven to dramatically reduce tooth decay by strengthening teeth and defending them against acids and harmful bacteria. And even though fluoride is naturally present in water, many communities adjust its concentration to a higher level that’s recommended for optimal dental health.
Fluoride can have an extra added benefit for people undergoing orthodontic treatment by preventing demineralization that causes those white spots commonly found on teeth once those braces come off. Fluoride is also a handy backup for those of us — especially youngsters and teens — who may have less-than-perfect daily brushing and flossing routines.
Besides its presence in our drinking water, fluoride is available in many forms and from many sources, including many toothpastes, some mouthwashes, a specially applied varnish, and even in prescription gels. During the course of our treatment, the orthodontist will discuss fluoride’s benefits and recommend the most efficient methods for you to make sure your teeth are getting enough of it.
The orthodontist at Ortho Inc. has the latest in techniques to help achieve that winning smile comfortably and efficiently. But we need our patients to partner with us by taking an active role in their oral health routine. Fluoride is just one of the ways to keep your teeth nourished and strong during our treatments. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with your oral hygiene questions or to make an appointment!
