Can I Do Anything to Shorten the Amount of Time I Have to Wear My Braces?
Some of the most common questions we hear from patients at the office of our friendly orthodontist at Orthodontics, Inc. are “How long will I have to wear braces?” and “When can I get my braces off?” The usual time period can range between eighteen and twenty-four months. But it’s worth noting that with these questions coming from both kids and adults, our replies differ based on each individual case and the reason for seeking treatment.
Another common question: “Is there anything that I can do to get my braces off sooner?” We understand that our patients are eager to show off their radiant smiles, but remember that the process takes time. There are, however, some steps you can take that have the potential of shortening the treatment period.
First, there’s your oral hygiene routine. Keeping your mouth healthy is an important step to take in the process. Keeping your teeth and braces free of food particles that can lead to plaque buildup and your gums healthy will contribute to what we’re working together to achieve. Floss and brush your teeth and gums regularly and, if your braces include elastic bands, make sure to follow our orthodontist’s instructions. If you’re in the habit of biting your nails or the tip of a pen, this is the time to stop.
Your diet can also be a game-changer, too. Stay away from gooey foods that can stick to the brackets, and hard foods that cause the wires on your braces to bend or break. It’s also advisable to take the time to cut your food up into smaller, bite-sized pieces. Raw fruits and vegetables, crusty breads, rolls and bagels, and some cuts of meat can all place stress on the brackets and wires.
