Do You “brush with greatness” At Least Twice A Day?

Our lives are filled with routines that keep us busy throughout the day. Keeping up with our responsibilities — whether at home, school or work — can be challenging, and sometimes we may need to cut corners to get everything done. But our friendly orthodontist at Orthodontics, Inc. wants to remind our patients that there’s one routine that just can’t be rushed. It only takes two minutes, but it may be the most important two minutes you’ll spend every day.

Perhaps there’s nothing more crucial to our oral health — and by extension, to our overall health — than the two minutes we spend brushing our teeth. How long we brush, including our technique, provide the very foundation of maintaining a healthy, radiant and long-lasting smile. The advances in orthodontic treatment we provide require our patients to maintain a rigorous oral hygiene routine to achieve optimal results. So let’s look at a few simple ways to improve your “brush with greatness.”

  • Take at least a full two minutes to brush with a soft-bristled toothbrush. That can seem like forever for youngsters, but parents can make it fun by turning it into a game. Some electric toothbrush models have built-in timers. Brush firmly but don’t apply too much pressure.

  • Position the brush at a 45-degree angle to the gums and brush in short, gentle strokes, making sure to include the inner, outer and chewing surfaces of the teeth. Tilt the brush vertically to clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth with up-and-down strokes.

  • Repeat this routine at least twice a day and don’t forget to clean between the teeth at least once with dental floss or a proximal (proxy) brush to remove plaque and food particles your toothbrush can’t reach.

Our orthodontist at Orthodontics, Inc. reminds you that oral health is your body’s first line of defense against harmful bacteria and infection. If you have questions about achieving and preserving a healthy, beautiful smile, please contact our office today!
