Five Steps to Keeping Your Teeth Clean with Braces

Our friendly orthodontist at Ortho Inc. is all about creating healthy, radiant, long-lasting smiles for our patients, no matter their ages. We have the techniques, technology and materials to help our patients achieve their dreams more comfortably and in some cases more quickly than in the past.

But, we need your help. We strongly recommend that our patients with braces or aligners become active partners in the treatment process. What exactly do we mean by that? By following the tips we have provided below, you can help immeasurably!

  1. Brush with greatness: Brushing your teeth slowly, carefully, one tooth at a time, taking care to clean all the angles — especially where the teeth meet the braces — is critically important. Don’t rush it, do the front, back, and tops of the teeth. And make sure to remove all rubber bands beforehand.

  2. Best bristles: Get your hands on a toothbrush with soft, flexible bristles and a brush head shaped for cleaning around brackets and wires. Change your toothbrush before the bristles become worn. Make sure you have a travel-size brush handy for when you’re at work, school, or away from home.

  3. Start pointing: Get comfortable using a proximal (aka proxy or interproximal) brush. This pointy implement reaches into places that a conventional toothbrush cannot get to.

  4. Follow the thread: Flossing those narrow spaces between the teeth is more important than ever. Have a travel size with you when you’re on the go.

  5. Go with the flow: Water is your friend when it comes to keeping food particles from building up on your teeth. Drink plenty of it, and make sure it’s got fluoride, which helps fight tooth decay. Consider using a mouthwash that contains fluoride, too.
