For Optimal Oral Health, There’s No Glossing Over Flossing! Here’s How

So, you’ve decided to take that big step toward achieving the healthy, radiant smile you’ve always dreamed of by visiting our friendly orthodontist at Orthodontics, Inc.. Congratulations, you’ve got excellent timing: We have more options than ever before for providing that long-lasting smile you’ll be proud to show the world!

During our treatment we’ll need you to be an active partner in this life-changing process by adhering to a robust daily oral hygiene routine. And while a key part of that is giving your teeth a thorough, two-minute brushing at least twice a day, let’s not gloss over the importance of dental floss! That thin ribbon, either waxed or unwaxed, is a crucial component in cleaning the film known as plaque that stubbornly sticks to our teeth, and to remove those pesky food particles our toothbrush can’t reach.

Here are a few pointers:

  • Cut a roughly 18-inch strand of floss, wrap most of it around a middle finger and the rest around the same finger of the other hand.

  • Grip the floss tightly between those fingers and your thumbs

  • Gently guide the floss between the teeth, taking care not to rub it too hard on the gums.

  • At the gum line, wind the floss around the teeth one at a time, creating a “c” shape, and slide in through the space between tooth and gum.

  • Holding the floss tightly, rub it gently up and down against all sides of each tooth.

  • Toss the floss after each use.

There are many varieties of dental floss and other oral care products, and different theories on whether it’s best to floss before or after brushing. Our orthodontist will gladly offer recommendations!

Whether it’s traditional metal braces, their ceramic cousin, or clear aligners, our orthodontist at Orthodontics, Inc. has an option for every patient, no matter the age. Please contact our office today for an appointment!
