Four Fun Facts You Didn’t Know About Orthodontics

Orthodontics has grown into one of the most popular specialties in dentistry, with more than nine million people — children and adults — receiving a growing selection of treatment options for achieving a smile that looks wonderful, feels great and makes eating and speaking more pleasurable than ever! Our orthodontist at Orthodontics, Inc. is proud to offer the latest technology and techniques our specialty has to offer, delivered by a friendly, accommodating staff that boasts years of experience and superb results.

We always enjoy educating our patients with some “fun facts” about what we do, and in that spirit we’d like to present a short list of things you may not know about orthodontics. Here we go!

  • Brace yourself: Although the use of rudimentary bands used to straighten teeth have been discovered as far back as in Ancient Egypt, the first braces are credited to a French dentist named Pierre Fauchard. Gold wire and thread were used in Fauchard’s invention, which dates to around 1728.

  • Entering the space age: Gold was the preferred metal used in braces until the late 1950s, when nickel titanium alloy was formulated by NASA for its strong, heat-resistant properties in its spacecraft. This discovery brought the price of braces down, leading to their wider use.

  • Star pupils: The technology for Invisalign, which uses clear plastic aligners instead of metal brackets and wires to straighten teeth, was invented by Stanford University students in the late 1990s.

  • Straight facts: If you think orthodontics is only about the cosmetic benefits of a beautiful smile, think again. Teeth that are properly aligned are easier to clean and protect, more comfortable for chewing and even improve your speech.

Our orthodontist at Orthodontics, Inc. has myriad options for delivering the smile you’ve always dreamed of, no matter your age. Please contact us to learn more about which option is right for you!
