How Long Do I Have to Wear my Braces or Aligners?

You’ve made the big decision to be fitted for braces or other orthodontic treatment. Congratulations — you’ve taken the first step on the road to a long-lasting beautiful smile and optimal oral health. Now, of course, comes perhaps the most frequent question our orthodontic specialists at the office of Orthodontics, Inc. are asked by our patients: How long will I be wearing braces?

Naturally, the length of time for treatment differs depending on the age and the specific needs of each individual and the type of orthodontic appliance that has been placed. The degree of straightening a person’s teeth require, the alignment of their bite, and the type of treatment — metal braces, clear aligners, or lingual braces glued behind the teeth — all come into play when determining the amount of time they must remain in place. For most people, the period of treatment lasts one to three years. A retainer is then worn for a certain period of time to ensure that the teeth remain set in their new positions.

It’s important to keep in mind that today’s braces are much more comfortable than in the past, and are composed of modern materials that are far more gentle for the wearer, produce more effective results, and don’t need as many adjustments as they once did. Our orthodontists make the entire process of having the braces placed and wearing them as convenient and hassle-free as possible for our patients.

The orthodontic specialists at the office of Orthodontics, Inc. provide our patients with the answers to all their questions about how to best prepare for treatment and care for their braces or aligners.
