How To Trick-or-Treat Safely With Braces or Aligners

It’s no wonder autumn is the favorite time of the year for so many of us. The air is crisp, the bugs are gone and the trees are resplendent in their fall finery. It’s also National Orthodontic Health Month, and our orthodontist at Ortho Inc. wants our patients to celebrate with a healthy, beautiful smile that will last for years to come. Of course, October ends with that ever-popular holiday, Halloween.

An estimated $10 billion will be spent for this ghoulish holiday, and you can bet that a nice chunk of that will be for sweet goodies that can lead to a scary scenario for all of those who are receiving orthodontic treatment. That makes this a suitable time to provide some helpful dos and don’ts for trick-or-treaters of all ages.

Treats: if you’re wondering if you can eat any candy if you have braces or aligners, the answer is yes, with an explanation. Stick to soft candies that melt in your mouth, such as soft cookies, peanut butter cups, marshmallows, and chocolate that doesn’t have nuts or caramels.

Tricks: Stay away from the sticky stuff like jellybeans, bubblegum, and taffy, as well as popcorn and hard candies. These are bracket-busters for anyone wearing braces, which will send you back to the orthodontist for repairs and could lengthen your treatment time.

Tooth brushing: Halloween indulgences make it extra important to maintain a robust oral hygiene routine. Make sure you’re brushing at least twice a day, for two minutes each time, with toothpaste containing fluoride. Consider switching to an electric toothbrush to remove more plaque, that sticky, bacteria-laden film that forms on your teeth. Floss at least once a day and consider using an interdental brush for hard-to-reach places between your braces.

The orthodontist at Ortho Inc. wants you to enjoy a Happy Halloween while still protecting that precious smile! Please contact our office for an appointment.
