I Got my Braces Off. Why Do I Need to Wear a Retainer?

Although the day your braces come off is certainly worth celebrating, that’s not the end of your orthodontic care. Now you’re ready for the next step in creating that award-winning smile: Wearing a retainer.

This special little device is perhaps the most important part of your treatment, and the orthodontists at the office of Orthodontics, Inc. want to make sure you understand how to properly wear and care for it.

First of all, you may be asking, why do I need a retainer after all that time I spent wearing braces or aligners? It’s because the process of rebuilding the bone tissue in your mouth takes time, and your teeth need to be stabilized during this period to prevent them from moving out of place during natural movements like chewing, swallowing and speaking.

Our specialists will recommend either permanent (fixed) or removable retainers, and customize the fit just for you. If you wear a fixed retainer, it will be placed and removed by your orthodontist. Removable retainers, on the other hand, must be cared for by the wearer.

Here are some tips for caring for a removable retainer:

  • Always keep it in its case, and carry that case with you at all times.

  • Don’t drop the retainer into your pocket or purse without its case.

  • Keep the retainer out of the heat, which can cause the device to become beformed.

  • Make sure to keep it away from pets.

  • Don’t wrap the retainer in a napkin, where it could easily get thrown away.

Your orthodontist will give you detailed instructions on cleaning your removable retainer, and whether it needs to be removed before meals. But the most important thing to remember is that a retainer can’t do its job unless you’re wearing it!

At the office of Orthodontics, Inc., we take all the right steps in creating a beautiful, long-lasting smile. Don’t hesitate to contact our office today for an appointment.
