The braces installed onto your teeth by your orthodontist, Dr. Joseph A. Wilson, will gradually adjust the positions and alignment of your teeth to give you a better functioning mouth and a more appealing smile. This is done by gradually applying progressive tension to the braces hardware during your routine adjustment sessions. Any damage suffered to your braces can increase the total duration of time it takes to achieve your new smile.
Sharp points from a loosened bracket, broken band or bent wire can threaten to cut or puncture your mouth. When your orthodontist initially installed your braces, you were given a piece of special orthodontic wax. If the damaged section is poking into your cheek or gums, you should try to secure it inside the wax. If you don’t have the wax handy, you might be able to make do with a pencil eraser.
It’s also not unheard of for a spacer to come loose or fall out shortly before a scheduled adjustment session. If this happens, you should give us a call. We might recommend coming in for an earlier adjustment session and have the spacer replaced.
