Keep Your Braces and Teeth Healthy with These Tips

We are thrilled to offer custom orthodontic treatment at Yuma Orthodontics, Inc. to help you achieve the healthy and beautiful smile you have always wanted. Braces require proper care in order to effectively improve your smile. The following tips can help you care for your braces and smile by avoiding certain foods and keeping your teeth clean:

— Your brackets, bands and archwires that make up your braces are strong, but they can be damaged by certain foods. During treatment, your diet should exclude any popcorn, nuts, bubblegum, caramel and ice, as well as any other food that is chewy, crunchy, sticky or hard.

— During mealtimes and snacking, choose softer foods that can be easily brushed away so that you don’t experience appliance damage or tooth decay that could disrupt your orthodontic progress.

— Your teeth are more susceptible to sugar while they are covered by braces, which is why it’s important to reduce your intake. Whether you eat sugar or not, you should maintain daily dental habits such as such as flossing and tooth brushing, removing any accumulation of plaque from the gum line and where the brackets touch your teeth.

— We encourage you to wear a sports mouth guard if you play sports so that an accidental blow to the face or hard fall don’t damage your soft tissues or your orthodontic appliance.
