Orthodontic Braces Might Help Minimize Diastema

Changes in your child’s oral structure can develop as they grow, and their jaw expands. This is often happens as their primary teeth are replaced by the 32 permanent teeth that will last them throughout adulthood.

Sometimes genetics, primary tooth loss complications and changes in your child’s mouth and jaw can cause two or more permanent teeth to erupt too far apart. This condition is known as diastema, and if it not addressed, it could lead to further alignment issues. Diastema can also increase your child’s chances of suffering a loss of tooth enamel. In some of these cases, your child might even be at risk for significant dental fractures. If your son or daughter has a significant gap between two or more of their teeth you should consider scheduling a consultation appointment with our orthodontist Dr. Jacob Spendlove. In many of these cases the orthodontist can address a diastema issue with some form of orthodontic work.

If the orthodontist decides to treat the problem with braces, your child will need to return to Orthodontics, Inc. for regular adjustments. The timing and frequency of these appoints will vary depending on the characteristics of your child’s mouth and their stage of oral development.

If you live in the Flagstaff, Arizona, area and your child has a gap between two or more of their teeth, you should consider scheduling a braces consultation at Orthodontics, Inc..
