Orthodontics: How It All Started
Orthodontics has evolved into one of the most sought-after dental services, with an estimated nine million people of all ages seeking treatment each year. Orthodontic specialists like Orthodontics, Inc. have the benefit of advances in technology, techniques and materials that make the entire experience of achieving a healthy, beautiful smile more successful and efficient than ever before.
Keeping all that in mind, we’d like to pay homage to the person who is credited with being the pioneer in this field. Edward Hartley Angle, a dentist in Pennsylvania at the end of the 19th century, is widely recognized as the first one to limit his practice to orthodontics and also teaching other dentists on the subject at various institutions. The term “malocclusion” for abnormalities in the alignment of the bite is said to have been coined by Dr. Angle, who also devised appliances and surgical techniques to treat these misalignments.
The contributions of Dr. Angle, who lived from 1855 to 1930, “to create order from chaos” in the study and treatment of discrepancies in the teeth and jaws “advanced greatly the cause of dental public health,” according to the National Library of Medicine.
We are confident that Dr. Angle would be proud of today’s orthodontics, with its myriad treatment options that include not only traditional metal braces, but their ceramic cousins that are less noticeable, and of course lingual braces that are tucked out of sight behind the teeth. He’d marvel at advances in treatment with clear aligners, which have quickly become a popular choice among patients of all ages.
Our orthodontist at Orthodontics, Inc. is proud to follow in the footsteps of Dr. Angle, who recognized that the proper alignment of the teeth and jaw is about more than just the many cosmetic benefits. Our overall health hinges on the fit, feel and function of our teeth. Please contact us today to learn more!
