Orthodontics, Then and Now: Some Fun Facts

Modern technology and materials have improved the treatments used by our orthodontist at Ortho Inc. to deliver healthy, radiant and long-lasting smiles, no matter your age. And while our attention is focused on state-of-the-art techniques to achieve excellent results more quickly and comfortably than ever before, it’s interesting to note that orthodontics is a centuries-old practice with roots that go back much farther.

So for our patients or those considering treatment, here are a few interesting facts about orthodontics.

  • The term orthodontics is drawn originally from Greek, pairing “ortho” meaning straight, and “dont,” which means teeth,

  • If you have crooked teeth, don’t feel bad — it’s a condition that dates way back in history. Egyptian mummies have been discovered with metal bands wrapped around their teeth.

  • The first description of an orthodontic appliance was in a 1728 book by a French dentist who wrote of aligning teeth using a band of precious metal. The specialty itself is said to have started around 1900 when a dentist named Edward Angle limited his practice to the movement of teeth and alignment of the jaw. Back then, gold was popularly used for braces.

  • Our teeth can be pushed out of place over time from forces like thumb-sucking or other repetitive habits. The breakdown of bone can also cause this to happen.

  • Our orthodontist uses a variety of options to gently guide the teeth back into the places where they belong. We offer several types of braces — traditional metal, ceramic, or lingual braces applied behind your teeth — as well as clear aligners. That’s why more people than ever, including many adults, are seeking orthodontic treatment.

Our orthodontist at Ortho Inc. has been achieving healthy, beautiful smiles with techniques that could only be dreamed of just a few years ago. Our expertise and personal service are unmatched for achieving results you’ll enjoy for years to come. Please contact us today for an appointment!
