Retainers After Braces
Using retainers after braces is essential in continuing the maintenance of the teeth and keeping the same bite and smile that the braces have formed over the last few years.
Types of Retainers
Fixed retainers – fixed retainers are for when the orthodontist is concerned that the teeth will try to move back into their original position after the braces are gone. Only the orthodontist can remove them. But fixed retainers do not affect eating or speaking abilities. It takes only a few days for you to adjust to it, then you should not be able to feel it.
Removable retainers – these retainers are to be worn only at night. As the name suggests, you can remove them anytime. You have to remember to remove them before eating.
As to how long retainers must be worn is different for everyone. Retainers can be worn for several years, or in some cases, indefinitely. Retainers are important in preserving the results that the orthodontist was able to achieve through the use of braces. If they’re not worn after braces, the teeth could slowly drift out of alignment. When that happens, it will go back to square one! So remember to wear retainers and consult with a skilled orthodontist to determine which type is best for you.
