Simple Things Help Prevent Damage to Braces

Your braces are a functional component for Dr. Joseph A. Wilson to correct the position of your teeth. Every four to six weeks you will need to return to Dr. Joseph A. Wilson’s clinic to have your braces adjusted and tightened. This will gradually stretch the periodontal ligaments that anchor your teeth in the sockets.

If your braces are damaged or you have cavities develop on your teeth, it could increase the amount of time it takes to fully correct your smile. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to maintain the structural integrity of your braces while also helping to prevent tooth decay problems.

Sticky substances like taffy, chewing gum, and other sticky foods can pose a serious threat to the integrity of your braces. When you chew them the suction could potentially pull a bracket or spacer out of position. In an extreme case, sticky substances could possibly bend a wire.

At the same time eating hard foods or crunching down on ice can also bend wires and damage braces hardware. This could potentially damage a band, or leave a sharp point in your mouth.

If you suffer any kind of damage to an element of your braces hardware you should not delay in seeking treatment with Dr. Joseph A. Wilson. The longer you delay the more likely you are to suffer complications.

When Dr. Joseph A. Wilson originally installed your braces he provided you with a piece of special orthodontic wax. If something is threatening to injure your mouth you can secure the sharp point inside the orthodontic wax or an improvised piece of a pencil eraser.

Your braces will also have an influence on your daily oral hygiene routine. If you’re having trouble brushing or flossing around a piece of orthodontic hardware you might want to try using a small interdental brush or a floss threader with waxed dental floss.
