The 101 on Cleaning Ceramic Braces

Here at Yuma Orthodontics, Inc., we offer a few different variations and alternatives to traditional braces. One of the more popular options your son or daughter might prefer is ceramic braces in Yuma, Arizona. This appliance has traditional wires and brackets that are coated with a ceramic material. The braces can be shaded to closely match the natural tooth enamel to help your child feel less self-conscious about wearing braces.

It’s important to remind your child that if any part of their braces become bent or damaged, or if they develop complications from tooth decay, it will require immediate repair and might extend the duration of the treatment time.

Your child should not eat sticky foods or chew on gum. These things could potentially harm the wires and bands, causing damage or even breaking a bracket loose. At the same time, they need to be wary of eating crunchy foods and hard candy and even chewing on objects like pens, pencils and ice.

They will need to clean their braces by brushing their teeth twice a day and flossing their teeth once a day. A diligent daily oral hygiene routine will help prevent or minimize complications that result from tooth decay.

If your child complains about cleaning some of the hard-to-reach places in the mouth, you might want to provide them with an oral water jet, floss threader or interdental brushes to help keep these hard-to-reach places clean.

Remind them that their natural tooth enamel will receive stains faster and deeper than the ceramic braces, so encourage them to cut back or quit on eating dark foods and using tobacco. If they do want to enjoy dark beverages, they might want to try drinking these beverages through a straw or they can brush their teeth shortly after drinking them.

If you have questions about how to help your child effectively maintain their ceramic-coated braces, you should call Yuma Orthodontics, Inc. at 928-343-9559 to schedule a consultation. Your orthodontist, Dr. Joseph Wilson, is happy to help you.
