Tooth-Building Foods That Will Make You Smile
Our orthodontist at Ortho Inc. has more ways than ever to create a healthy, radiant smile — and we can often achieve these results more quickly and comfortably than ever before. The techniques and technology we possess provide unparalleled results for people of all ages.
During and after orthodontic treatment, there is plenty our patients can do to ensure the smile we’re creating lasts a lifetime. Maintaining a robust oral hygiene routine is an absolute necessity. And don’t forget about your diet! Your choices at mealtime have a profound effect on your oral health.
Consider the following foods containing tooth-building minerals and nutrients when planning your shopping list and menu:
Foods rich in calcium including dairy products like milk, cheese and yogurt strengthen enamel — that hard outer shell that guards our teeth against cavities and erosion. If you are lactose intolerant or allergic to dairy, you can substitute soy-based foods like tofu and soy beverages. Almonds, green, leafy vegetables and beans are also good sources of calcium. Also of note: Vitamin D contained in fish and some fortified products helps the body absorb calcium.
Protein from lean meats, eggs, beans and nuts help the body repair damaged tissue. Protein also contains phosphorus, which strengthens teeth and balances the pH levels in the mouth to discourage growth of bacteria that can lead to tooth decay.
Vitamin C from fruits like orange, grapefruit, strawberries and cranberries can aid in washing away acids that cause bacteria on the surface of the teeth. It also contains antioxidants that promote oral health.
Fluoride, the mineral found in water, some teas, grapes, raisins, and some fruits, helps guard against cavities. Of course, water is essential for simply washing away bacteria from the mouth.
