Treatment Doesn’t End After Your Braces Come Off
Undergoing orthodontic therapy is an investment in your time, effort and money, with your end asset being a healthy and beautiful smile. And just as with any other important investment, you want the results to last. That’s why you can’t forget about it all once your braces or appliance comes off. Your new smile requires maintenance.
The office of Orthodontics Inc is proficient at diagnosing and treating all orthodontic issues, as well as providing the treatment needed to conserve excellent oral health. We take as much time as you need to address your every concern and clearly explain your options in care.
Immediately following your active treatment, your orthodontist will most likely prescribe a retainer, which is crucial to preserving all of the work you and he (or she) put into correcting the new configurations of your teeth. Some patients will have to wear retainers for a prescribed amount of time, while other patients will need them for the rest of their lives.
When cared for well, your retainer can last a long time. But, as with most other objects, nothing endures forever, and it will have to be replaced. To get the most out of a retainer, store it in its case when it’s not in use, keep it away from heat and hide it from pets, especially your dog.
There are two main types of retainers: removable and fixed. Removables, which the patient inserts and takes out, come in two forms. The first kind is made of wire and a plastic-like substance. The section of the retainer that covers the roof of the mouth or goes behind the lower front teeth is a shade of pink that matches the gums. The second kind are clear trays fabricated from a plastic-like material that hug the teeth.
A fixed retainer, which the orthodontist places and removes, is a thin, custom-made wire that’s fused to the interior side of upper or lower teeth. The orthodontist should be notified immediately if a tooth’s wires become loose.
The orthodontist will explain the extra cleaning care that comes with wearing retainers. You will see your orthodontist for retainer checkups as often and for as long as he or she prescribes.
