We’ve Got A Mouthful To Say About Your Bite and How You Chew

It may surprise you to learn that each one of us spends roughly a half-hour each day chewing our food. That adds up to about a full week of chewing every year! And while most of us may not give the way we chew our food a second thought, our friendly orthodontist at Ortho Inc. wants to take this opportunity to serve up a few important facts about how it affects our oral and overall health. At our state-of-the-art practice, we’re all about creating a smile that’s not only beautiful, but healthy and comfortable, so that every bite can be an enjoyable one!

How many times should you chew each mouthful of food before swallowing? The consensus among experts seems to be that there is indeed a magic number, and that’s thirty-two times. Naturally, if you’re eating soft, watery foods like fruits, that number may dip in comparison with chomping on something hard or crunchy like nuts or meats. Chewing is a crucial first step in the digestive process, generating saliva that helps break down the foods you're ingesting so there’s less work for your stomach. And chewing slowly and carefully not only increases the pleasure we derive from eating, but lowers the risk of choking or developing digestive issues.

At mealtime, experts suggest taking small forkfuls or spoonfuls, without heaping the food on the utensils. Get in the practice of chewing slowly, at first counting to 32 until it becomes a habit. Swallow once the food has lost its texture.

Of course, chewing properly depends on a bite that’s in alignment. Our orthodontist at Ortho Inc. has more ways than ever to achieve a smile that functions as great as it looks. Life is more pleasurable when we can savor every meal! Please don’t hesitate to contact us today to find out about how today’s orthodontics can achieve results you’ve always dreamed of!
