What Are Lingual Braces and Are They Right For You?

Like other areas of medical and dental care, advances in orthodontics have led to more choices and better results for people of any age who desire a healthy, radiant, long-lasting smile. Our orthodontist at Orthodontics Inc. has the experience, techniques, and materials to fit any individual need or circumstance, and provide this service in greater comfort and within a shorter time period than in the past.

Among the options we offer for straightening our patients’ teeth and aligning their bites are the lingual braces. More patients have been inquiring about lingual braces, so we’d like to provide a brief description here.

Lingual braces are affixed to the back side of the teeth, which is known as the lingual side, near the tongue and palate. This means that the wires, elastic bands, and brackets are all tucked away and out of sight unless the wearer opens her or his mouth wide. The invisibility factor has in some cases made them popular among adults who feel self-conscious about wearing braces, and among some celebrities, too, for the same reason.

Lingual braces are favored by some musicians who play wind instruments because they cause less interference with their playing; and by athletes who engage in contact sports for safety reasons. As with braces applied to the front of the teeth, lingual braces require an adjustment period as well as a specific oral hygiene routine to make sure they stay clean, which our orthodontist carefully explains to wearers.

Keep in mind that lingual braces are only one option for attaining the smile you desire, and our orthodontist at Orthodontics Inc. will perform an evaluation before deciding if linguals are right for you. If not, don’t frown! We have other treatments including traditional ceramic and plastic braces as well as invisible aligners that are highly effective. Please contact our office for an appointment.
