Your Child’s First Visit to the Orthodontist
If you’re a parent preparing to accompany your child for his or her first visit to the orthodontist, relax! Our orthodontic specialist at Ortho Inc. will make the process a comfortable experience. Our staff has had years of experience guiding patients of all ages and their families through our state-of-the-art treatments. If you’re wondering what to expect during that initial visit, here’s a handy guide.
Before we begin our comprehensive examination, we shall listen carefully to any concerns you or your child may have. Your child will then be seated in a comfortable chair for our orthodontist to conduct the exam, with an overhead light turned on to enable us to get a good look inside your child’s mouth. We’ll gently use a small, hand-held mirror to get a good view, especially of the backs of your child’s upper teeth. Your child will be asked to bite down so that we can take note of how the upper and lower teeth come together, as well as observe how the jaws are developing.
Afterward, we will discuss our evaluation, recommend whether orthodontic treatment is needed, and answer any questions you may have about when treatment should begin. If no treatment is indicated, we may recommend follow-up visits to monitor your child’s development.
When should your child’s first visit to the orthodontist take place? The American Association of Orthodontists recommends this initial checkup take place no later than age 7, because by that age we can begin to spot the conditions that may need treatment. Of course, if you notice something that seems unusual or concerning, there’s no need to wait. And, even if your child is 8 or older, it’s not too late!
Rest assured, our orthodontist at Ortho Inc. will do everything we can to make you and your child comfortable during your visit. Please contact our office to arrange an appointment!
