It’s important to understand that our mouths are filled with bacteria, some of which are harmful. And because our mouths are the gateway to the respiratory and digestive systems, some of these microscopic organisms can potentially contribute to diseases. If you’re careful about your oral hygiene, you’re probably doing a good job controlling bacteria. But if you’re not, that bacteria can not only lead to cavities (tooth decay) and gum disease, but to illnesses including pneumonia, endocarditis, cardiovascular disease, and complications during pregnancy.
To head off these problems before they occur, we strongly recommend brushing your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste; replace your toothbrush every three to four months or less if the bristles become worn; floss daily; if you’re wearing braces, use an interdental brush to reach those in-between spaces; get regular professional cleanings and exams; stick to a healthy diet while restricting your sugary foods and drinks; and avoid tobacco.
